11.8 NEWSLETTER - 23,000 Signatures in One Day!

This week, despite the freezing cold temperatures and brutal wind, our grassroots army showed up in force on Election Day, collecting a whopping 23,000 signatures from Caribou to Kittery at more than 120 polling locations in 15 counties! This was truly an amazing feat considering we had only three days to print, sort and distribute the petitions and our packets to nearly 200 volunteers.

Featured News Coverage

WGME’s Jon Chrisos covered our Election Day efforts in this report, and Kay Stephens from the Penobscot Bay Pilot interviewed activists Andrea Palise and Matt Wagner in this story who described the day as an, “impressive show of force on the first day of this new Citizen’s Initiative effort.”

Personally, I couldn’t agree more!

Activists of the Week

This week, we would like to recognize all of the volunteers who stood outside and froze their butts off to make the Election Day signature push a great success. It takes real grit and dedication to brave the elements like you did, with some of you clocking in a 12-13 hour day! Bravo! Your efforts made a real difference, and gave us a solid start to this signature gathering effort.

A list of notary and signature turn-in events can be found HERE. If you are looking to sign the petition, that’s your action item for this week! If you are a signature collector, please make arrangements to get your notarizeddocuments in to your volunteer coordinator by Friday, November 13th, or mail them back to us at:

Upcoming Statewide Signature Event

Let’s keep the momentum going! We are aiming for another statewide signature event in the coming weeks.

  • Send the CMP Corridor Packing Signature event: Saturday, November 14 from 8am-12pm.

We’re encouraging volunteers to set up at sidewalks in front of post offices (11/14) to collect signatures as part of a coordinated signature collection effort! If you would like to host an event on this day, or any kind of signature event at another time in your town, please email [email protected] so we can help get the word out! If you’re unable to collect, but you would like to find a petition to sign, here’s a list of statewide events.

This is Not a DONE Deal!

Lastly, in light of the recent issuing of the (woefully inadequate) Army Corp of Engineers permit, I would like to remind each and every one of you that, contrary to what CMP would have you believe, THIS IS NOT A DONE DEAL.

Here’s why:

  1. Army Corps permit is under Federal appeal by Sierra Club, NRCM and ANC because they only conducted an Environmental Assessment (EA), instead of a thorough Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) they required for similar projects in NH and VT.
  2. The Department of Energy (Presidential Permit) has not yet been granted.
  3. We, and our intervenor partners, are engaged in an appeal at the Maine Department of Environmental Protection.
  4. There is a lawsuit challenging the legality of the public lands lease that CMP illegally obtained without the 2/3 approval of the Maine Legislature.
  5. CMP has not obtained dozens of municipal permits. Four towns have ordinances against this project.
  6. WE have this referendum effort to complete, which has retroactivity clauses, so if CMP decides to start work on the corridor, that would be a huge financial risk for their shareholders. It's up to us to bust this signature drive into full gear!

Here's what you can do:

  • Email us at [email protected] to get involved to help collect signatures, even if it's just your friend and family group. Make a personal commitment to get 30 signatures and turn them in.
  • Go here to find signature locations for the petition.

Thank you all, and happy collecting!
