PRESS RELEASE: BILL TO END UNDUE FOREIGN INFLUENCE IN MAINE REFERENDUMS ENACTED, SENT TO GOVERNOR MILLS FOR SIGNATURE

AUGUSTA - The Maine Senate enacted LD 194, "An Act to Prohibit Contributions, Expenditures and Participation by Foreign Government-owned Entities To Influence Referenda." This bill closes the dangerous loophole exposed by Hydro-Quebec, a Crown Corporation owned 100% by a foreign government, that has been exploited to funnel more than $10 million into a campaign to influence Maine voters.

"No CMP Corridor is so grateful to those who voted to close the foreign government loophole, and to Senator Rick Bennett for bringing this important bill forward," said Sandi Howard. "Current law has allowed a foreign government a bullhorn to drown out the concerns of Mainers to promote the interests of taxpayers in another country. Under this bill, that abuse will end."

"Regardless of how you feel about the CMP Corridor, Hydro-Quebec has exposed a dangerous loophole, and Maine legislators rightfully voted to close it," said Hon. Tom Saviello. "Hopefully Governor Mills will act swiftly to sign this bill into law. It's simply the right thing to do."
