Strimling OpEd: Since when does CMP care about climate change?

Maine Beacon

For decades, Central Maine Power (CMP) has opposed almost all progressive advances in renewable energy. In fact, back in 2005, when I sponsored LD 1379, the first community wind bill in Maine to be signed into law, guess who opposed it?

And yet, Thorn Dickinson, President and CEO of CMP’s corridor project, at a debate on Newscenter Maine regarding Question 1 last week, over and over told the audience that the corridor project would help “meet our clean energy goals.

Huh? Who exactly is the “our” in this sentence?

CMP? Can’t be. They opposed almost every effort in front of the legislature to reduce greenhouse gasses, for years.

Here is a small sample of the testimony from the corporate lobbyists for CMP to the Maine Legislature’s Energy and Utilities Committee in regard to reducing greenhouse gasses in Maine:

“…my name is David Allen. l’m here on behalf of CMP to testify in opposition to LD 1146, An Act to Encourage the Use of Renewable Energy, April 9, 2013

“…my name is David Allen. l am here on behalf of CMP to testify in opposition to LD 1252, An Act to Improve Maine’s Economy and Energy Security With Solar and Wind Energy April 24, 2013.

“…my name is David Allen. I’m here on behalf of CMP and Maine Natural Gas to testify in opposition to LD 1426. An Act to Improve Maine’s Economy and Lower Energy Costs Through Energy Efficiency, April 30, 2013

“…my name is Joel Harrington. l am here today to testify on behalf of CMP in opposition to LD 1073, An Act to Lower Energy Costs and Increase Access to Solar Energy for Agricultural Businesses, April 9, 2015

“…my name is Joel Harrington. l am here today to testify on behalf of CMP in opposition to LD 1263, An Act to Create Jobs and Promote investment in Maine’s Economy through increased Access to Solar Energy,April 16, 2015

“…my name is Joel Harrington. I am here today to testify on behalf of CMP in opposition to L.D. 1444, An Act Regarding Large-Scale Community Solar Procurement,” April 27, 2017

“…my name is Joel Harrington. l am here today to testify on behalf of CMP in opposition to L.D. 1504, An Act Regarding Solar Power for Farms and Businesses, May 10, 2017

“…my name is Jim Mitchell and I am here today on behalf of CMP testifying in opposition to L.D. 1127, An Act to Expand Community-based Solar in Maine, March 27, 2019

I could go on, but I assume you get the point.

Here’s what former state Sen. Tom Saviello said in response during that same debate: “It’s interesting that CMP has had the epiphany, now that they are all about greenhouse gasses. Because when you go back to when I served in the legislature, every bill, every bill that we had in front of us that dealt with greenhouse gasses, they worked against.”

Yup.
